NOT REQUIRED, UNLESS…

You have a loan on your All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV).                                                                                        .

LIABILITY PROTECTION:

Shield yourself from liability for injuries, property damage, and lawsuits.

YOUR MEDICAL EXPENSES:

Ensure coverage for medical expenses for you and your passengers in case of an accident.

PROTECTION FOR YOUR ATV:

The two standard coverages do not provide protection for damage or replacement of your ATVTo ensure coverage for your ATV, Collision and Comprehensive coverages are needed.

There are Two Standard ATV Coverages:

Bodily Injury Liability (BI):

This coverage pays for the medical expenses of others if you’re at fault in an ATV accident.  BI coverage extends to passengers in other vehicles, pedestrians, or cyclists who may be injured.  BI includes compensation for medical costs, pain and suffering, and lost wages for the injured parties.

However, BI does not cover injuries to you or your passengers.  To ensure coverage for injuries sustained by you or your passengers, you must purchase optional medical coverage.

Property Damage Liability (PD):

This coverage pays for the costs of repairing or replacing another person’s damaged property if you are found at fault.  PD covers repairs to their vehicles, buildings, and other damaged property.

However, PD does not cover damage to your ATV.  To cover damages and repairs to your ATV, you must purchase optional Collision and Comprehensive Coverages.

Optional ATV Insurance Coverages:

Collision Coverage:

Helps pay to repair or replace your ATV after an accident, regardless of fault.

Example: While avoiding a deer running into the road, you end up plowing into a tree, causing $2,000 in damage to your ATV. With a $500 collision deductible, you’ll cover that amount, and your insurance company will cover the remaining $1,500.

Comprehensive Coverage:

Protects against non-collision events out of your control, such as theft, fire, vandalism and more.

Example: Your ATV is damaged by a hailstorm, resulting in $1,500 of damage. With comprehensive coverage and a $250 deductible, your insurance company will pay $1,250 and you’ll pay $250 to get your ATV fixed.

Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage (UM/UIM):

Protects against injuries and property damage caused by a driver with little or no insurance.

Example: You’re rear-ended in your ATV by a driver who doesn’t have insurance. UM/UIM can cover your $10,000 medical bill and ATV repairs up to your $100,000/$300,000 limits. Your bills are paid in full because they do not exceed the coverage limits.

Medical Coverage:

Pays for injuries sustained by you or your passengers, regardless of fault.

Example: You lost control of your ATV and crashed, resulting in injuries that required $10,000 for medical care and rehabilitation. With a $20,000 medical coverage limit, your policy covers all your bills.

Roadside Assistance Coverage:

Covers towing services if your ATV breaks down for any reason.

Example: You’re physically unable to change a flat tire, and you need help. Fortunately, you have roadside assistance coverage with a $100 per tow limit, which pays to get your ATV to the nearest repair shop.

Optional Equipment Coverage:

You have the flexibility to choose the coverage amount needed to re-customize or restore your ATV. With comprehensive and collision coverage, you’ll automatically get $3,000 of coverage for upgrades, customizations, equipment, and your accessories. If that amount is insufficient, you can purchase up to $30,000 in additional coverage.

Example: The $250 cargo rack you added to your ATV for hauling equipment was stolen.    It was covered under the basic limit of this coverage.

Carried Contents Coverage:

Protects any personal effects you’re carrying when a covered loss occurs, including theft.

Example: Your smartphone, wallet, and camera were stolen from your ATV’s storage compartment. The cost to replace the stolen items was $500, which was covered by your carried contents coverage.

Here are some things to consider when deciding whether to file a claim:

  • Was anyone injured in the accident?
  • Did you cause damage to someone else’s property or vehicle?
  • Is your ATV unsafe to drive?
  • Do the damages exceed your deductible?
  • Is the issue related to maintenance or normal wear-and-tear?

If you answered yes to one or more of these questions, it’s advisable to consider filing a claim. If you have further questions about the claims process, don’t hesitate to contact your insurance carrier directly.

Step 1: Document the Scene

  • Take photos of the damage to all vehicles involved.
  • Capture the positions of the vehicles.
  • Photograph the license plates of the other vehicles.

Step 2: Exchange Information

  • Share insurance details with other drivers and note any passengers.
  • Contact the police to assist with information exchange and file a police report.
  • Try not to apologize or make statements that could be construed as admitting fault.

Step 3: Collect Additional Information

  • Make note of the accident location.
  • Make note of the towing company if your ATV requires towing.

Step 4: Notify Your Insurance Carrier

A deductible is the amount of money you must pay out of pocket for covered expenses before your insurance coverage begins to apply.

For example, if your ATV insurance collision deductible is $250 and you incur $1,000 in damages, the insurance company will pay the repair shop $750, and you would be responsible for paying your $250 deductible.

All-Terrain Vehicle liability coverage limits in Michigan apply to Bodily Injury (BI), Property Damage (PD), Uninsured Motorist (UM) and Underinsured Motorist (UIM) coverages.

They are typically written out as three numbers like 25/50/25. Here’s what they mean:

  • $25,000 limit per person for Bodily Injury in an accident
