REQUIRED BY LAW:

Michigan mandates that all drivers purchase four RV insurance coverages.

LIABILITY PROTECTION:

Shield yourself from liability for injuries, property damage, and lawsuits.

YOUR MEDICAL EXPENSES:

Ensure coverage for medical expenses for you and your passengers in case of an accident.

PROTECTION FOR YOUR RV:

The four required coverages in Michigan do not provide protection for damage or replacement of your Recreational Vehicle (RV)To ensure coverage for your RV, Collision and Comprehensive coverages are needed.

Michigan Law Requires You to Purchase Four RV Coverages:

Personal Injury Protection (PIP):

Provides coverage for medical expenses of Michigan driver’s and their passengers, regardless of fault.

In Michigan, each driver’s PIP covers their own medical expenses and those of their passengers, regardless of fault.

If a Michigan driver is at fault in an accident involving a non-Michigan driver, their required Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage will also cover their medical expenses as well as those of their passengers.

On the other hand, if a Michigan driver is NOT responsible for an accident involving a non-Michigan driver, the non-Michigan driver’s Bodily Injury Liability coverage will cover the Michigan driver’s medical expenses and those of their passengers.

Personal Protection Insurance(PPI):

Covers the costs of repairing or replacing a Michigan resident’s damaged property in an accident, regardless of fault.

This coverage extends up to $1 million for property damage, including buildings, fences, and properly parked vehicles.

PPI does not cover damage to the Michigan driver’s vehicle or their property.  To cover damages and repairs to your auto, the Michigan driver would need to purchase optional Collision and Comprehensive Coverages.

Bodily Injury Liability(BI):

Provides protection for injuries to people in other vehicles if the accident involves a non-Michigan driver.

This coverage pays for the medical expenses of others if a Michigan driver is at fault in an accident involving a non-Michigan driver.  BI coverage also extends to passengers in the non-Michigan driver’s vehicle, as well as pedestrians or cyclists who may be injured. BI includes compensation for medical costs, pain and suffering, and lost wages for the injured parties.

However, BI does not cover injuries sustained by anyone in the Michigan driver’s vehicle.  Injuries resulting from an accident are covered under the Michigan driver’s required Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage.

Personal Damage Liability (PD):

Covers property damage, including vehicles, for non-Michigan drivers.

This coverage pays for the costs of repairing or replacing a non-Michigan driver’s damaged property if the Michigan driver is found at fault.   PD insurance covers repairs to their vehicles, buildings, and other damaged property.

However, PD does not cover damage to the Michigan driver’s vehicle.  To cover damages and repairs to their vehicle, the Michigan driver would need to purchase optional Collision and Comprehensive coverages.

Optional RV Insurance Coverages:

Collision Coverage:

Assists in covering the costs of repairing or replacing your RV after an accident, regardless of fault.

Example: While avoiding hitting a deer, you end up plowing into a guardrail, causing $5,000 in damage to your RV. With a $500 collision deductible, you’ll pay that amount, and your insurance company will cover the remaining $4,500.

Comprehensive Coverage:

Protects protection against non-collision events beyond your control, such as theft, fire, vandalism and more.

Example: Your RV is damaged by a hailstorm, resulting in $3,500 of damage. With comprehensive coverage and a $250 deductible, your insurance company will pay $3,250 and you’ll pay $250 to get your RV fixed.

Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage (UM/UIM):

Provides coverage for injuries and property damage resulting from an accident caused by a driver with little or no insurance.

Example: You’re rear-ended in your RV by a driver who doesn’t have insurance. UM/UIM can cover your $10,000 medical bill and RV repairs up to your $100,000/$300,000 limits. Your bills are paid in full because they do not exceed the coverage limits.

Replacement Cost for Personal Effects Coverage:

Personal property inside your RV is covered up to the limits you specify.

Example: You accidentally run over your cellphone and camera.  Your policy can pay to replace the items up to the limits of your coverage.

Roadside Assistance Coverage:

Covers towing services if your RV breaks down for any reason.

Example: You’re physically unable to change a flat tire, and you need help. Fortunately, you have roadside assistance coverage with a $100 per tow limit, which pays to get your RV to the nearest repair shop.

Total Loss Replacement Coverage:

Your totaled RV will be replaced with a brand new one, minus your deductible, if your RV is five model years old or less. If your RV is older than five model years, you’ll receive the amount specified in your policy.

Example: If your totaled RV originally cost $75,000 but is only worth $55,000 today, you’ll be compensated to replace it with a new one of the same model year or later and the same trim level or better—even if it costs more than the original vehicle’s purchase price.

Full-Timers Liability Coverage:

You’re covered up to a specified limit if you’re liable for injuries that occur in and around your RV. Full timer’s liability is designed for those who use their RV as a permanent residence.

Example: You are sued after a guest slips and falls in your RV.

Loss Assessment Coverage:

Covers any fees or charges imposed by your RV association, up to $5,000.

Example: Your RV association may require members to contribute to repair costs for damages to shared areas caused by a storm.

Emergency Expenses Coverage:

You receive up to $750 for transportation, hotel costs, food, and fuel if your RV becomes disabled (more than 50 miles away from your primary residence) due to a covered loss or non-covered loss (such as a power outage or a mechanical or electrical breakdown), or if an evacuation is required and you’re unable to use your RV as a residence.

Example: While on a road trip in your RV, it breaks down far from home. You need lodging and transportation until your RV is repaired.

Pest Damage Protection:

If your RV is damaged by a non-domesticated animal, such as a bird, rodent, or mouse, pest damage protection can cover the repairs. Your RV must be less than six years old to be eligible for coverage and a $250 deductible applies.

Example: You often leave your RV open when you’re camping, and a family of mice gets inside, causing damage.

Pet Injury Protection Coverage:

If your dog or cat is injured in an accident while riding in your RV, you can receive up to $1,000 to cover their vet bills. No deductible applies.

Example: Your dog travels with you everywhere in your RV. Unfortunately, the dog is injured when you are forced to slam on the brakes to avoid an accident.

Roof Damage Protection:

Pays for repairing or replacing the damaged roof of your RV. It includes wear and tear on the roof and damage caused by its malfunction. This coverage is available for RV’s less than six years old, with a $250 deductible applying.

Example: Continuous exposure to harsh weather conditions in Michigan causes your RV’s roof materials to degrade, resulting in cracks, leaks, and overall deterioration.

Here are some things to consider if you are deciding whether to file a claim:

  • Was anyone injured?
  • Did you damage someone else’s property or vehicle?
  • Is it unsafe to live in your RV?
  • Are the damages above your deductible?
  • Is it just a maintenance issue or normal wear-and-tear?

If you answered yes to one or more of these questions, you should consider filing a claim. If you have questions about filing a claim, call your carrier directly.

Step 1: Document the Scene

  • Take photos of the damage to all vehicles involved.
  • Capture the positions of the vehicles.
  • Photograph the license plates of the other vehicles.

Step 2: Exchange Information

  • Share insurance details with other drivers and note any passengers.
  • Contact the police to assist with information exchange and file a police report.
  • Try not to apologize or make statements that could be construed as admitting fault.

Step 3: Collect Additional Information

  • Make note of the accident location.
  • Make note of the towing company if your RV requires towing.

Step 4: Notify Your Insurance Carrier

A deductible is the amount of money you must pay out of pocket for covered expenses before your insurance coverage begins to apply.

For example, if your RV insurance collision deductible is $250 and you incur $1,000 in damages, the insurance company will pay the repair shop $750, and you would be responsible for paying your $250 deductible.

Recreational Vehicle liability coverage limits in Michigan apply to Bodily Injury (BI), Property Damage (PD), Uninsured Motorist (UM) and Underinsured Motorist (UIM) coverages.

They are typically written out as three numbers like 25/50/25. Here’s what they mean:

  • $25,000 limit per person for Bodily Injury in an accident
  • $50,000 total limit per accident for Bodily Injury
  • $25,000 limit per accident for Property Damage.
